Re-Discovering Hygge

Originally from Norway, Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) comes from the word hyggia-meaning “to be” or “to think”. Hygge is not about possessing more things, but a positive mind set encouraging comfort, contentment, and well-being by simplifying life and slowing down. Hygge experts say winter is the ideal time to pause and focus on the parts of your life you find contentment and even joy. Need help to find your Hygge? Read on to learn more.

1. Take A Break Are there activities you truly enjoy but rarely do? Set aside the grocery list, household chores and extra to-do’s to enjoy one thing you always put off for later. Go for a run, read a book, do yoga, or even a brief nap help recharge and renew.

2. Stay Social Life is better in the company of others. Why not spend time with those whose presence brings you happiness? A cup of coffee with a friend, a walk outdoors with your partner or phone call to check in with a loved one. Active connecting not just texting, fosters your mind and body well-being.

3. Prepare a Slow Food Researchers connect baking and cooking with positive feelings of anticipation. Gathering and mixing ingredients, adjusting the temperature on the stove, and tasting as you cook give you a sense of accomplishment. No need for an elaborate feast, comforting homemade bread, chili, soup, or Nonna’s Sunday sauce taste even more delicious after you’ve smelled it baking or slowly cooking for a few hours.

4. Sharing Is Caring Because who doesn’t like dessert? Bake your favorite cake or cookies and enjoy! Even better, why not double the recipe to share with your colleagues or neighbors? One of your basic survival needs, sharing food with others is positive act of care and instant pick up for you & your recipients.

5. Go Outdoors While winter may encourage you to hibernate, weather permitting, go outside, without your phone. A stroll around your neighborhood or office, replenish the bird feeder, or shovel your neighbor’s walkway. Regular access to experience Mother Nature results in an improved outlook and better sleep.

While your life will not be stress free, daily acts of Hygge will keep you healthy, happy & energized for spring!
